Midway through a European tour supporting The Dandy Warhols, AK/DK take time out to play for a home crowd at a free night at The Green Door Store to celebrate the release of their second single, Dispatch #2. The imaginatively titled follow up to Dispatch #1 which came out last year on a selection of brightly coloured cassette tapes, the record is another dose of the electro punk synths and speeding motorik beats that the band have become known for. Combining the punchy bounce of Battles with the synthesizer fetishism of Add N to (X) and a joyful disregard for the rules, it is a physical impossibility to sit still while AK/DK are playing.
However, it’s in a live setting that the band really come into their own; their semi-improvised two drummer setup with banks of synths and sequencers and live visuals from metaLuna gave Brighton some of its most exciting gigs of the last year, including a collaboration with ex-Can singer, Damo Suzuki and led to Source magazine declaring them Brighton’s best live band.
With support from Napoleon IIIrd, whose Beach Boys obsessed lo-fi electronica, home made instruments and sheer sonic wonderment has to be seen to be believed.
