Tuesday 12th of June sees the return of Moon Duo to Brighton. The band was formed in 2009 by Ripley Johnson of San Franciscan psychedelic noise droners Wooden Shjips, and his partner, Sanae Yamada. However, this is much more than a mere side project; Moon Duo retain Wooden Shjips’ love of hypnotic synths played at head exploding volume, but take this down a more krautrock inspired route, weaving fuzzy guitars and ghostly vocals into a dense sound mantra. Hints of Suicide and Spacemen 3 are evident, but essentially the pair create a sound very much their own; a mesmerising, swirling cacophony of epic proportions, the blistering heat of the American desert set to a restrained motorik beat.
Their second album, Mazes was released last year on the impressively rostered Souterrain Transmissions label to a rapturous welcome, and ended the year riding high on many ‘best of 2011’ lists. A remix album quickly followed, boasting reinterpretations by such luminaries as Spacemen 3/Spectrum’s moog wielding shaman, Sonic Boom. So if you ever wished Lift To Experience had a drum machine, or that Kraftwerk would just sometimes just lose it a bit, then head down to the Green Door Store for a night of sonic mind-expansion, and be sure to get there early as support comes from Brighton’s premier exporters of volume, Negative Pegasus.
