When I first heard Alt-J’s recently released debut album, An Awesome Wave, I realised they played at The Great Escape but didn’t appear on my long list of up and coming bands to see over the three day weekend. Now the opportunity has arisen to see them at one of my favourite venues, and this is simply a must see chance.
You can understand why they were chosen to support Wild Beasts earlier in the year. From listening, you can hear intricate guitar patterns with an experimental edge such as in Bloodflood, which works comfortably well with the lead singer’s vocals. Tessellate has a great intro piano section, which is quite haunting at first. Breezeblocks could be a future crowd pleaser with its sing along harmonies. For a first album, each song sounds different from each other, so I am very intrigued to see how this is translated to a live audience.
So in exchange for a tenner you can either see one of the most exciting and original British bands I have heard this year or stay in and watch that new episode of Top Gear.
